Concussion Management
What is a concussion?
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury, caused by a blow, jolt or bump to the head and sometimes a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move back and forth rapidly. Signs and symptoms of a concussion may include, but are not limited to; a persisting headache, nausea, blurry vision, confusion, dizziness, temporary loss of consciousness, slurred speak, and delayed response to questions. In more serious cases, additional symptoms can appear later, such as concentration and memory issues, irritability and personality changes, sleep disturbances, and psychological adjustment issues. This is called Post Concussion syndrome.
What is concussion management?
Concussion management involves assessing and treating multiple areas of the injury, such as whiplash, vestibular dysfunction, oculomotor dysfunction, balance, coordination, vision therapy, cardiovascular rehabilitation, and psychological support. We utilize updated techniques and testing protocols to obtain objective data from many different systems. The goal of concussion management is to guide our patients safely along the road of recovery, while collaborating with other health care providers (i.e. physicians, psychologists) and professionals (educators) to delivery optimal and holistic care.
